Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team battled the cold and a local rival on Wednesday afternoon as they lost to the Hilbert Hawks 3-2.
D'Youville got on the board first in the game, scoring a pair of runs in the third inning. With two outs, Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) walked. Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) then tripled to left center, scoring Carney and giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) would then single up the middle to drive home Russo and give the women a 2-0 advantage.
The Spartans seemed to have a handle on the game until the bottom of the sixth inning. Hilbert scored three runs to take the lead with one inning to go. With all momentum lost, D'Youville was unable to score a game-tying run and they lost 3-2.
Five different players recorded hits for the Spartans in the game. Russo and Langer were two of those players along with Carney, Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale), and Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden).
Goodrich pitched a solid game going 6.0 innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out three.
The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to the cold. A makeup date has not yet been rescheduled.
Thursday's doubleheader against Wells has been cancelled due to weather. The next doubleheader for the women comes this Saturday, April 21 as the women host La Roche.
