Altoona, PA – The D'Youville softball team split a doubleheader against the Penn State-Altoona Lions on Sunday afternoon, losing in game one 9-1 but bouncing back to win game two 5-2.
It wasn't until the third inning when the first runs were scored, but unfortunately they came off the bats of the Lions. They scored four runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 8-0 lead over the Spartans.
D'Youville responded in the fifth with their lone run of the game. Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) singled to begin the inning and moved to second on a Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) sac-bunt. Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) would then single up the middle to score Carney, making the game 8-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Altoona would score a run to bring their lead to eight runs, ending the game in the sixth and giving the Lions a 9-1 victory.

Carney and Langer each also had two hits while Russo, Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier), and Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) recording one hit each.
Game two saw the Spartans get on the board first, this time coming in the fourth inning. Langer led off with a single and was driven home by a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) two-run home run two batters later to give D'Youville a 2-0 lead. Altoona would then answer in the bottom of the inning and cut their deficit in half, making the score 2-1.
The Spartans answered back in the top of the fourth with three additional runs. With one out, Carney singled up the middle. Russo would reach on a fielder's choice but score in the next at-bat as Langer tripled, making the score 3-1. Haberer then doubled to bring home Langer and Evans hit the third consecutive extra base hit as she doubled, scoring Haberer and bringing the lead to 5-1.
Altoona was able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning, but they were never able to come all the way back as they lost game two by the final score of 5-2.
Evans led the way for D'Youville with two hits, three RBI, and a home run. Carney and Langer each added two hits while Haberer and Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) each had hits.
