Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team dropped a pair of games to the rival Medaille Mavericks Tuesday afternoon, losing game one 7-0 and game two 7-1.
Medaille took advantage of a pair of big innings, scoring three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the sixth as the Spartans were unable to get anything going offensively all game long, losing game one 7-0.
The top two hitters of Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) were the only two Spartans to record hits with each going 1-3. Pitcher Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) went 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out eight.
Game two was much of the same story for both teams. The Mavericks scored two in the top of the first inning, but D'Youville was able to respond in the bottom of the third. Carney led off with a walk and Russo laid down a sac-bunt to move Carney to second, but an error by the Medaille second baseman allowed Carney to keep on going all the way home, making the score 2-1 in favor of Medaille.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, that was the only offense they would be able to produce for the remainder of the game. Medaille scored three runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh on their way to a 7-1 victory.
Both Carney and Russo each tallied a hit with Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) also recording one hit each. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) went 7.0 innings in the game.
The next game for D'Youville comes tomorrow, April 25 as they host Penn State-Behrend beginning at 3:00pm.
