Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville softball team split a conference doubleheader with the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats on Friday afternoon, defeating the Bobcats 8-4 in game one and losing 11-4 in game two.
D'Youville got going early in game one in a big way. Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) singled with an out followed by a Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) and Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) each reaching base. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) then stepped to the plate and belted her first career home run in grand slam fashion, giving the women a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the third, Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) singled in Langer with two outs to increase the D'Youville lead to 5-0. Greensburg would then score their first run in bottom of the fourth to trail 5-1.
Other than a three-run inning in the fifth to make the score 6-4, the Spartans were in no danger of losing the game. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint), Meyer, and Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) each recorded an RBI in the final three innings on their way to an 8-4 game one victory.
Four different players recorded two hits in game one for D'Youville and all nine starting hitters for the Spartans recorded a hit. Over 5.0 innings, Goodrich allowed four earned runs and struck out five for her sixth win of the season. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) came in for 2.0 innings of relief and gave up just one hit and struck out two.
Game two went much differently for the Spartans. Greensburg led off the game with a run in the first inning, but D'Youville scored a pair with RBIs from Gawlak and Wright to take a 2-0 lead.
Greensburg responded with three runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead. D'Youville would tie the score in the top of the fourth after Colan and Carney each picked up RBI, but the Bobcats would go ahead by a run in the bottom of the innings. They then scored six runs in the fifth to go on to win the game 11-4.
Russo, Langer, and Colan each had three hits at the plate with four other players adding a hit. Four different players recorded the four RBI in the game and each run was scored by a different player. Haberer went 3.0 innings and earned the loss while Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) came in for 1.2 innings of relief and Goodrich had 1.0.
The next doubleheader for the women will come on Tuesday, May 1 as they host Pitt.-Bradford beginning at 3:00pm.
