Erie, PA – The D'Youville softball team lost their first game of the AMCC softball championship tournament on Friday afternoon, falling to the Penn State-Altoona Lions 6-2.
Altoona scored a run in each of the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) led off with a single and moved to second in the next at bat, followed by Langer stealing third. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) then grounded out to the shortstop but was able to score Langer, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Lions.
In the fifth and sixth innings, Altoona was able to add four more runs total and extend their lead to 6-1. D'Youville would score their final run of the game in the seventh as Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led off with a single. She then moved to second in the next at-bat and then scored on a Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) single to bring the game to its final score, 6-2.
Four different Spartans recorded a hit in the game. On the mound, Haberer pitched four innings and allowed two earned runs. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) came in for 3.0 innings of relief and allowed one earned run.
The women will play their second game of the tournament tomorrow, May 5 as they play Medaille at 11:00am. If the Spartans were to lose, they would be eliminated from the AMCC playoffs.
