Softball Ends Florida Trip

Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team closed out their 2019 spring training trip on Thursday as they lost to the Manchester Spartans 13-5 in game one and Hope Dutch 9-1.

In game number one of the day, Manchester took control of the game early. They scored three runs in the top of the first followed by four in the top of the second for a quick 7-0 lead. They would add two more runs in the top of the fifth before D'Youville would get on the board in the bottom of the inning.

Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) led off the bottom of the inning with a single, followed by Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) reaching on a fielder's choice. Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) would then load the bases with a walk in the next at-bat.

Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) would then single to drive in Purucker and Colan. Two batters later, Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) would walk to load the bases again. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) would then walk to drive in Milleville with Jordan Hartman (Lake View, NY/Frontier) singled home Carney and Meyer two batters later as the Spartans ended the inning trailing 9-5.

Manchester would tack on four additional runs in the final two innings, going on to defeat D'Youville by the final score of 13-5.

Carney, Meyer, Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden), Hartman, and Purucker all recorded one hit with Carney and Hartman tallying two RBI each. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) got the start, pitching two innings. Goodrich came in relief for five innings of work and allowing no earned runs with two strikeouts.

In their Florida finale against Hope, the Dutch broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. D'Youville would answer in the top of the fourth. Purucker and Haberer had back-to-back walks with one out, followed by a Colan single to load the bases. Hartman would then come to bat and hit a sac fly to center, scoring Purucker for the Spartan's lone run.

Hope answered with four additional runs in the bottom of the fourth, adding another run in the bottom of the fifth as the Dutch went on to win the game 9-1.

The team tallied six total hits with all six hits coming from different players. Hartman had the lone RBI with Purucker, Haberer, and Milleville each recording walks. Haberer got the start in the game, striking out four.

D'Youville will return home to Buffalo to play their next doubleheader as they take on the RIT Tigers on Monday, March 25 at home, beginning at 3:00pm.
