Haberer Pitches No-Hitter in Sweep of Hawks

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team played their first conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping the Hilbert Hawks by the final scores of 8-0 in game one and 6-1 in game two.

D'Youville had a hot start to the game at the plate with Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) leading off the bottom of the first in game one by reaching on an error. She would move over to third two batters later following a Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) single and would then come around to score in the next at-bat with a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) single. Two batters later, pitcher Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) would single herself, driving in Meyer to put the Spartans up 2-0 after one.

In the bottom of the second, the Spartans would continue to hammer the ball and add to their total. Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) singled to start the inning, then stealing second. Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) would then drive in Colan with a single, advancing to second on the throw. Carney would then come to bat and walk after Milleville moved to third on a wild pitch. With Carney stealing second, Milleville was able to score on an error by the Hilbert catcher to increase the lead to 4-0.

Still with no outs, Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) would walk as her and Carney would advance into scoring position following a wild pitch. Meyer then came to bat again, this time singling to drive in both Carney and Russo as the team extended their lead to 6-0 through two innings.

Two additional runs were added in the third and fourth innings. Russo picked up an RBI after driving in Milleville in the bottom of the third while Milleville would then pick up an RBI of her own in the bottom of the fourth as she drove in Haberer, making the score in favor of the Spartans at 8-0 with D'Youville going on to win by that score after five innings.

The biggest story of the game was Haberer. The sophomore pitcher went 5.0 innings, striking out four and walking one as she allowed no hits for the first time in her career. At the plate she was equally effective as she went 1-1 with one run scored and one walk.

Meyer went 2-3 with at the plate with two RBI and one run scored as Milleville went 1-1 with two runs scored, two RBI, and two walks. Eight different Spartans would register a hit in the game with six different players scoring at least a run.

Game number two had a similar start as game one for D'Youville. Russo reached base on an error, advancing to third in the next at-bat. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) would single two batters later, scoring Russo for a quick 1-0 lead. Evans reached base on a fielder's choice as her and Goodrich would be put on second and third with a wild pitch. Next up, Haberer would triple to score both runners and put D'Youville up 3-0 after one.

Two additional runs would be tacked on to the Spartan's lead in the fourth. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) reached on a fielder's choice, then stealing second with Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) pinch running. She would advance to third on a Jordan Hartman (Lake View, NY/Frontier) sac-fly, then scoring on a Milleville single up the middle. Milleville would then come around to score in the next at-bat on a Carney triple to put D'Youville up 5-0.

Hilbert would put up a run in the top of the fifth to trail 5-0, but the Spartans would respond in the sixth. Purucker would single to left center to start the bottom of the inning, but would come around to score following two groundouts and a wild pitch, increasing the lead to 6-1 with D'Youville going on to win by the same score.

Carney led the team by going 2-3, adding an RBI. Meyer, Goodrich, Evans, Haberer, Purucker, and Milleville would all tally a hit as Haberer led the team with two RBI.

Haberer picked up her second win of the afternoon by going 5.0 innings, allowing one earned runs and striking out one. Goodrich came in to relieve Haberer as she pitched 2.0 innings, striking out one and allowing no runs and walking none. Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) played a strong defensive game in right field.

D'Youville will next play this Saturday, March 30 as they travel to Franciscan to take on the Barons in doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
