Brockport, NY – The D'Youville softball team resumed their season after nearly a week off as they fell to the Brockport Golden Eagles 7-3 in game one of their doubleheader and 10-9 in game two.
No runs were scored in the first inning as the Golden Eagles would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. D'Youville responded in the top of the third as Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) hit her first career home run to tie the game at 1-1.
Six runs were then scored in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-1 lead from Brockport. In the top of the seventh and with one out, Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) singled to center field. Next up, Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) came to bat and also hit her first career home run as the women trailed 7-3. Unfortunately for the Spartans, their run production for the game as they fell by the final of 7-3.
Carney, Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale), Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore), Purucker, and Colan all tallied a hit in the game with Colan and Carney earning the RBI. Colan and Carney hit their first career home runs in the game as well. Haberer got the start in the game, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing six earned runs.
Game two saw a great deal of offense from both sides. D'Youville was on the board early and took control of the game in the first two innings.
Carney walked, followed by singles from Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and Meyer to load the bases with no outs. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) would then hit a sac-fly to score Carney for a 1-0 lead. Haberer would then come to bat, driving in Russo and Meyer to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
The Spartans would double their lead in the second as Carney doubled with one out. Two batters later, Meyer would single to score Carney and increase the team's lead to 4-0. Next up, Goodrich would come to bat and blast her first homer of the season and make the lead 6-0 after two.
Brockport would score two runs in each of the third and fourth innings to trail 6-4. In the top of the sixth, three more runs would cross the plate for D'Youville to extend their lead.
Colan led off the inning with a single, followed by a pinch-hit walk to Jordan Hartman (Lake View, NY/Frontier). Rachele Anello (Buffalo, NY/Charter) would then pinch run and steal second as Colan would score on a passed ball in the next at-bat. Two batters later, Carney would step to the plate and hit yet another double, increasing the team lead to 8-4. With two outs, Goodrich would collect her fourth RBI of the game with a single to score Carney as the Spartans held a 9-4 lead.
The Golden Eagles would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth and trailed 9-5. They then headed into the seventh trailing by four, but they would score five runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game 10-9.
The top seven hitters in the Spartan's lineup would all tally at least a hit in the game. Meyer led the team by going 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Carney went 2-3 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a pair of doubles. Goodrich had the biggest day at the plate with a 2-3 performance, collecting a team high four RBI and one run scored. Haberer also added two RBI.
Russo, Purucker, and Colan each had one hit in the game. Goodrich went 6.2 innings in the start, striking out six.
D'Youville will next play this Saturday, April 6 as they host the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
