Meyer's Walk-off Topples Undefeated Lions

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team split with the previously undefeated Penn State-Behrend Lions on Wednesday afternoon, losing to the Lions 9-1 in game one and taking down Behrend 5-4 on a walk-off in game two.

Behrend began the scoring in the top of the first inning for a quick 1-0 lead. D'Youville would come back with their lone run of the game in the second to tie the game. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) began the inning with a double to center field, advancing to third on a wild pitch. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) would then single, scoring Evans and tying the game.

In each of the next three innings, the Lions would add to their run total. They would score five in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth to end the game after five innings with a 9-1 victory.

Evans led the team with a 2-2 effort, followed by Haberer, Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint), and Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) all tallying a hit each. Haberer pitched 5.0 innings in game one, striking out three.

Game two was scoreless through the first two innings before the Spartans would break the tie in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) singled through the left side. Carney then came to bat, tripling to left center field to score Milleville and giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Three runs from the Lions would cross the plate in the top of the fourth as Behrend quickly responded and took the lead. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth until D'Youville would answer to retake their lead.

Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) began the bottom half of the inning with authority, destroying her team leading second home run of the season to left field to make the score 4-2. Then with two outs, Milleville and Carney would single to bring up Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier). Russo would then drive a ball to right center field, scoring Milleville and Carney to give D'Youville the lead again at 4-3.

Despite the Spartans taking the lead, the Lions wouldn't go quietly. They tied the game in the top of the sixth at 4-4. They would then come up scoreless in the seventh, giving the Spartans a chance to win the game in the bottom of the inning.

Carney reached on a single with out for the women's first base-runner. She then had a heads up play to steal second, putting her in scoring position. Russo would then come to the plate and double, putting her and Carney in scoring position. Next up, Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) reached on a fielder's choice as Carney broke for home and beat the throw to win the game 5-4.

Goodrich pitched a great game, allowing four earned runs and striking out three over 7.0 innings. At the plate the sophomore went 1-3 with an RBI and one runs scored on her second homer of the season.

Carney led the team with a 3-4 performance, scoring two runs. Russo went 2-4 with a team leading two RBI while Milleville went 2-3 with two runs scored. Haberer tallied a hit as well.

The next doubleheader for the women comes on the road this Saturday, April 13 as they play at La Roche beginning at 1:00pm.
