Bradford, PA – The D'Youville softball team split their fifth consecutive doubleheader on Thursday in the AMCC Game of the Week as they lost to the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers 5-2 in game one and won game two 8-1.
It was a scoreless game through the first three innings until the Spartans scored a pair of runs in the fourth. Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led off the inning after reaching on an error. Two batters later, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) doubled to drive in Russo to make it 1-0. Jordan Hartman (Lake View, NY/Frontier) would then single to move Evans to third as she came in to score in the next at-bat with an Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) single.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth, D'Youville led 2-0 before the Panthers scored five runs to take the lead. The Spartans were unable to score any runs in the top of the seventh as they fell in game one 5-2.
Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Evans, and Haberer all recorded the hits in the game. Haberer pitched 6.0 innings in the game, striking out one and allowed three earned runs.
The scoring began much earlier in game two for the Spartans. Russo singled through the left side with one out in the top of the first and came in to score after a Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) triple to lead 1-0. Two batters later, Hartman would single to second to drive in Meyer and give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the top of the second, Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) doubled. Carney would then single up the middle to increase the team's lead to 3-0.
Bradford would score a run in the bottom of the inning to bring the gap down to two. D'Youville would continue their scoring in the third, blowing the game open.
Evans began the inning with a single, moving to third on a Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) double. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) then singled to score Evans with Goodrich scoring on an error. Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) then reached on an error and stole second, putting runners on third and second.
Milleville then cleared the bases with a triple, increasing the Spartan's lead to 7-1. Carney then came to bat, singling up the middle to score Milleville and making it an 8-1 game. No more runs would cross the plate in the game with D'Youville taking the second half of the doubleheader 8-1.
Goodrich pitched an outstanding game on Thursday. The sophomore went 7.0 innings, allowing one run and struck out two.
Four different players tallied two hits in the game with Carney, Russo, Hartman, and Milleville tallying a pair each. Meyer, Evans, Goodrich, Purucker, and Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) all had one hit in the game. Milleville led the team with two runs scored each while she and Carney had two RBI each.
The Spartans will next play this Saturday, April 20 as they host the Mount Aloysius Mounties for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
