Seventh Inning Rally Leads Spartans to Split with Mounties

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team fought through the wind and the rain on Saturday afternoon as they split their conference doubleheader against the Mount Aloysius Mounties with a 3-2 win in game one and 12-7 loss in game two.

Mount Aloysius scored the first run of the game in the third, doubling their lead in the sixth to make it 2-0 after a rain delay. The game would come down to the Spartan's final chance to win the game.

Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) would then reach in the next at-bat on an error that put her on third and Meyer on third. A walk to Jordan Hartman (Lake View, NY/Frontier) would load the bases as Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) would come in to pinch run.

In the next at-bat, Meyer scored on a wild pitch and both runners moved up a base. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) walked to load the bases yet again. Still with two outs, Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) would walk to bring in the game-tying run to make the score 2-2. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) then singled through the left side to bring in Colan as the Spartans won on a walk-off.

Evans and Purucker led the team with two hits each as Meyer, Evans, and Colan all scored the runs. Haberer and Purucker tallied two RBI while three players tallied one hit each. Haberer pitched a strong game, going 7.0 innings and allowed just one earned run and struck out eight.

The second game began with both teams getting on the board early and often. Mount Aloysius scored four runs in the top of the first to jump out to a quick lead. The Spartans would respond to bring the game back to within on in the bottom of the inning.

Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) began the inning with a walk. Meyer singled two batters later followed by an Evans double, scoring Carney and putting Meyer on third. Hartman then double to center, scoring both Meyer and Evans as D'Youville trailed 4-3 after one inning.

Two additional runs came from the Mounties in the second as they extended their lead to 6-3 through two. In the third and fourth innings, the Spartans were able to get right back in the game by tying it up.

Hartman began the inning with a single and was pinch run for by Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint). She would come around to score two batters later on a Purucker RBI to make the score 6-4.

Carney again walked to begin the inning, moving to second on a wild pitch. She then went to third on a Meyer single that put her on second with the throw to third. Hartman came up two batters later, singling and drove in the two runners to tie the game 6-6.

Three runs in the fifth as the Mounties extended their lead to 9-6. In the bottom of the sixth, Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) tripled to begin the bottom of the sixth. Carney would then single to score Milleville as the Spartans were again in striking distance.

However, Mount Aloysius scored three runs in the top of the seventh and go on to win 12-7.

Hartman had an outstanding game, going 3-4 with four RBI in the game. Evans and Carney each had a RBI while Meyer went 2-4 with two runs scored and five different players tallied one hit each.

Goodrich pitched 4.0 innings, striking out one. Haberer came in to pitch 3.0 innings in relief.

The next doubleheader for the women comes this Monday, April 22 as they host the Alfred State Pioneers in their final non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
