Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville softball team dropped their first conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday afternoon as the Medaille Mavericks defeated the Spartans by the final scores of 4-3 in game one and 8-0 in game two.
D'Youville did all of their damage in inning one of the first game. Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) got on base with one out after getting hit by a pitch. An error by the center fielder allowed Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) to reach base and come all the way around with Russo to score for a 2-0 lead.
Jordan Hartman (Lake View, NY/Frontier) and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) would then both reach base with Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) walking to load the bases. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) then reached on a fielder's choice to score Rachele Anello (Buffalo, NY/Charter), who pinch ran for Hartman, to make the lead 3-0 after one.
The Mavericks would get their first run in the bottom of the third to trail 3-1, then added a pair of runs in the fourth tie the game at 3-3. Heading into the seventh inning, the score remained tied until the Mavericks had a walk-off hit to score the winning run and win the game 4-3.
Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) led the team with a 3-4 performance. Russo, Evans, and Goodrich each tallied one hit while Russo, Meyer, and Anello scored the runs. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) pitched 6.0 innings, striking out four.
Game two didn't fair much better for the Spartans. Medaille scored two runs in the second and fourth innings for a 4-0 lead. The Mavericks then scored four in the sixth as they went on to win the game 8-0.
Carney, Meyer, Hartman, and Purucker each had one hit in the game. Goodrich got the start and pitched 4.0 innings, striking out one.
D'Youville will conclude their regular season schedule this Saturday, April 28 as they host the Penn State-Altoona Lions for senior day with game one of the doubleheader set to begin at 1:00pm.
