D'Youville Upsets Pitt.-Bradford in Extra Innings to Advance in AMCC Playoffs

Erie, PA – The fifth seeded D'Youville softball team stayed alive in the AMCC Softball Tournament on Saturday afternoon, defeating and upsetting the third seeded Pitt.-Bradford Panthers in extra innings with a 6-4 victory.

D'Youville was on the board first in the top of the first inning as Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) tripled with one out. Two batters later, Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) singled up the middle to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead after one.

The lead doubled for the Spartans in the top of the second. With one out, Jordan Hartman (Lake View, NY/Frontier) doubled. She then moved to third in the next at-bat with Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) singling up the middle to score Hartman and extend the team's lead to 2-0.

A third run came across the plate for the Spartans for the third consecutive inning in the top of the third. Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) tripled to lead off the inning. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) would come up to bat two batters later and hit a sac-fly to center field, extending the lead to 3-0.

Bradford would start to get going in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs to cut their deficit to one at 3-2. They then added another run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.

The game would go to extra innings where the Spartans would make their mark in the top of the eighth. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) reached base after getting hit by a pitch with an out. Two batters later, Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) struck out but reached base on a wild pitch as Meyer then reached on a single to load the bases.

An error at first allowed Carney to reach and Evans to score – giving D'Youville the 4-3 lead in extra innings. Next up, Russo ripped a single through the left side to bring home Purucker and Meyer as the women went into the bottom of the eighth leading 6-3.

The Panthers would not go quietly, however. A pair of hits put Bradford on first and second with one out. Two batters later, a Bradford runner would score to make the score 6-4 in favor of the Spartans.

However, D'Youville would get the job done as they sent home the Panthers by winning the game 6-4 in extra innings.

Russo led the offense with a 3-5 performance in the game, including the pair of game-winning RBI in the eighth inning for the women. Meyer also went 3-5 in the game with an RBI and a run scored while Milleville went 2-4 with a run scored. Carney went 2-5 in the game as Haberer and Hartman each tallied a hit.

Haberer got the win in the game as she allowed one earned run through 6.2 innings. Goodrich made a relief appearance in the middle of the game and did excellent, allowing no hits or runs in 1.1 innings of work.

D'Youville will next play later in the day on Saturday with their opponent TBD.
