Softball Opens Up Florida Trip with Halladay's 100th Victory

Clermont, FL - The D'Youville softball team began their annual spring trip to Florida with a pair of wins as the women took down the UMass.-Dartmouth Corsairs 5-0 for head coach Ona Halladay's 100th win, and the Geneva Golden Tornadoes 3-2.

In the first game of the day against the Corsairs, the Spartans didn't get on the board until the third inning. Jamie Bower (Middleport, NY/Royalton-Hartland) began the inning with a double, followed by Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) reaching on an error. Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) would single to bring in Bower as the women led 1-0. Madisyn Pepke (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) then came to plate to score Meyer on a sacrifice, and then Carney scored in the next at-bat as Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) reached on an error with the Spartans up 3-0 after three.

D'Youville would expand their lead in the fourth inning, putting the game away. Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) singled with one out in the inning, followed by Bower with her second double in as many innings. Meyer then came to bat and drove them both in for a 5-0 as the women would go on to win by the same score.

Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had an outstanding start to the season for the women, pitching 7.0 innings of shutout ball with just four hits allowed and seven strikeouts. On offense, Bower had a dynamic debut as she went 3-3 with two runs scored. Meyer had a team-leading two RBI with Carney, Pepke, and Langer all tallying a RBI.

Game number two of the day against Geneva saw the Spartans strike quickly in the first inning. Carney and Pepke both reached with Haberer coming to bat two batters later. She singled to center field, driving in both Carney and Pepke to give the Spartans a quick 2-0 lead.

Geneva cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth, but D'Youville would get that run back in the top of the seventh. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) began the inning with a single up the middle. Three batters later, Bower singled through the left side to bring Goodrich home to increase the lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the inning, the Golden Tornadoes closed the gap to one yet again. However, the Spartans would hold onto their lead and win the game 3-2.

Laura Gregory (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy) earned her first win with the Spartans in her first career start with the team, pitching 5.0 innings while allowing one earned run and striking out three. Goodrich came in to earn the save with 2.0 innings of work, striking out four.

Carney, Pepke, and Haberer all collected two hits with Haberer and Bower tallying the RBI. Milleville, Goodrich, and Bower all collected a hit each.

The Spartans will next play St. Scholastica and Dominican at 9:00am and 11:15am tomorrow morning.
