Leesburg, FL - The D'Youville softball team added to their early season win total on Wednesday, defeating the Alverno Inferno 12-0 and the Penn State-Hazelton Lions 9-2.
D'Youville came out strong in the first inning of game one against Alverno. Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) led off with a single, followed by a Madisyn Pepke (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) single. Both would come in to score with Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) driving them both in with a double as she scored on an error during the next at-bat.
Jamie Bower (Middleport, NY/Royalton-Hartland), Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), and Maya Blackwell (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) would all reach base following their first out. Bower scored on Rylie Russo (Lake View, NY/Frontier) single with Milleville also scoring. Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) would then single, scoring Blackwell. Pepke would then come to bat two batters later and drive in Russo as the women led 7-0 after one inning.
Like they did in the first, Bower, Milleville, and Blackwell reached in consecutive order to begin the inning. Russo and Meyer would then single in back-to-back at-bats to bring home Bower and Milleville. Carney would then reach base to load the bases with back-to-back wild pitches that scored Russo and Meyer. Two batters later, Langer singled up the middle to score Carney to bring the game to it's final score of 12-0.
Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was once again the story of the game, pitching her first career perfect game. She went 5.0 innings, allowing no hits, runs, or walks while striking out nine.
Pepke, Langer, Blackwell, Russo, and Meyer all tallied two hits with Langer leading the way with three RBI while Russo and Meyer added two each. Carney, Bower, Milleville, and Russo each had two runs while Carney and Milleville had one hit each.
To begin game two, Carney, Pepke, and Langer all singled. Haberer would single bring in Carney with Bower hitting a sac-fly to center in the next at-bat. Laura Gregory (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy) would then double to left center, bringing home Langer to give the Spartans 3-0 after one.
In the second, Meyer doubled to left center to lead off the inning. After a Pepke walk, Langer would double home both runners to increase the lead to 5-0.
D'Youville added two more runs in the fourth as Carney singled to begin the inning. Langer would again double to bring in Carney with Bower hitting a single two batters later to score Langer, making it a 7-0 lead.
The bottom of the fourth saw Hazelton score two runs, but the Spartans would tack onto their lead in the sixth. Carney singled to start the inning with Pepke reaching on an error that allowed Carney to score. Langer would then drive in Pepke as the Spartans scored their final run to win the game 9-2.
A great deal of production game from the top of the D'Youville order. Carney and Langer each went 4-5 while Carney scored three runs and Langer scored two with four RBI and three hits. Bower had two hits with two RBI while Pepke scored three runs with her and Meyer recording two hits while Gregory, Russo, and Haberer tallying a hit each.
Gregory pitched 4.0 innings with two earned runs while Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) coming in for 3.0 innings of relief.
The women will end their time in Florida on Thursday as they play Marian and Skidmore.
