Buffalo, NY- Dan Glover enters his second season as the Head Coach of the D'Youville Women's Basketball team with excitement and optimism. As the Spartans head into the 2013-14 season, the team expects improvement on the success generated last season.
"We are looking to build on what we were able to accomplish last year. Our biggest goal this season is to make our first conference tournament appearance as a member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference," commented Coach Glover.
The Spartans will be returning six players to the 2013-14 squad. Among those six are the team's top three scorers from last season who will be the cornerstone of the program. Sophomore Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) was last season's AMCC Newcomer of the Year and Second Team All-Conference. Last season Smith played in all 25 games, averaging 31 minutes per contest and led the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game (6th overall in the AMCC), 7.1 rebounds per game (8th in the AMCC), field-goal percentage of .472 (4th in the AMCC), and 0.9 blocked shots per game (5th in the AMCC). Highlights during Smith's stellar rookie season included scoring a team single-game record 35 points at home versus Pitt-Greensburg on February 2, receiving AMCC Player of the Week honors on February 4, and recording a team-high three double-doubles.
Alongside Smith are juniors Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West). Andrews averaged 11.9 points per game last season and is a solid all-around player and a deep threat for the Spartans. Dougherty was second in scoring last season at 12.4 points per game and is a versatile player who has the size to play inside, drive to the basket, and can step out and knock down shots. Smith, Andrews, and Dougherty will be looked upon to be leaders for the team on and off the court.
The team has added six freshmen and two transfers to the roster this season.
Among them, freshmen Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) is expected to make significant contributions this season. "She is an all-out athlete who will play a guard/forward position for us. She is a respectable finisher who has a nice touch from the outside and is not afraid of the contact," said Coach Glover.
Also joining the team are transfers Casey Bartels (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West), along with freshmen Morgan McDermott (Hamburg, NY/Nichols), Alyssa Donnelly (Alden, NY/Nardin Academy), Kylene Hall (Groton, NY/Groton), Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden), and Lové Taylor (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) who will add to the talented depth and experience needed towards reaching this year's goals.
The Spartans tip off their 2013-14 season on November 15 at the Allegheny Tip-Off Tournament against Allegheny College. Game time is scheduled for 8:00PM.
