Buffalo, NY-Visiting Pitt-Bradford was 2-0 in AMCC play coming into the College Center Gym. D'Youville knocked the Panthers back in the standings while making a statement about how this year's team will play in close games. The Spartans took the lead, lost the lead twice, then got the lead back to beat Pitt-Bradford 63-56.
The Spartans are 3-1 in AMCC play, 5-6 overall.
"We really maintained our composure when things were not going our way," said Spartan Head Coach Dan Glover. "When the game got close and we we were not scoring, we found other ways to win. We locked it down on defense and we were tough on the boards. Then we hit the shots when it mattered."
Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) paced the Spartans with a game-high 14 points to go with a game-high 6 assists. Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) went for 11 points, 11 rebounds, and a game-high 2 blocked shots.
The Spartans led by 10 with just over 13 minutes to play and went cold over the next six minutes and Pitt-Bradford was up 48-47.
The game was tied at 51-51 with just over four minutes to play and Korona made back-to-back jumpers and the Spartans never lost the lead. The Spartans defense limited the Panthers to just 2 of 12 field-goal attempts from that point.
D'Youville will look to keep moving up the AMCC standings when they host Hilbert College in the College Center Gym January 8 at 8:00 p.m.
