Women's Basketball Falls to Mustangs In Season Opener

Brockport, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost the opening game of their 2015-16 season Saturday afternoon to the Morrisville State Mustangs by the final score of 73-46.

Senior captain Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored the 9 of the first 10 points for the Spartans in the first quarter. Fellow senior and captain Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored the final bucket of the first quarter for D'Youville with the Mustangs up on the Spartans 18-12.

The second quarter featured three freshmen scoring their first points as Spartans. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) brought the D'Youville deficit to 4 points with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter. Darian Evans (Irving, NY/Lake Shore) and Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) then scored within two minutes of each other, with Wirth's layup making the score 31-24 Morrisville. The Mustangs ended the first half of play up on D'Youville 33-24.

Morrisville took control of the game to open the third quarter. They outscored the Spartans 16-2 in the first 7 minutes of play until Wirth and Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) got D'Youville back on the board. Wirth added another basket but the Mustangs took a 60-33 lead into the fourth quarter.

Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) had 4 points in the fourth quarter, along with 3 from Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) and 2 from Mary Roberts (Syracuse, NY/Northstar Christian Academy) and Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack). Morrisville would win the game by the final score of 73-46.

"We had a lot of good looks and shots didn't fall," said Head Coach Danny Glover.

Alexis Smith led the team with 9 points in the game. Korona followed with 8 points and Laguerre and Wirth each added 7. Out of the 13 players that saw time for D'Youville, 12 of Spartans recorded a rebound. Jean-Ann led the team with 7 rebounds in the game.

Coach Glover and the Spartans "will regroup and look to come out strong tomorrow" as the team plays against the host Brockport Golden Eagles at 12pm.
