Brockport, NY - On the second day of the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament, the D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their second loss of the season by the final score of 72-50 to the host Brockport Golden Eagles.
The game opened up with Brockport jumping to an early 5-0 lead. D'Youville would score their first basket of the game just under 4 minutes in off a made jumper from Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West). The Spartans continued to share the ball in the first quarter as all 8 points were scored by a different player.
Heading into the second quarter up 13-8, Brockport made a quick three to extend their lead to 8. The Golden Eagles took a firm grasp of the game as they outscored the Spartans 16-5 in a 5 minute span, and would carry their 38-15 into halftime.
Down by a significant margin, D'Youville started the third quarter with new energy. Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) hit 2 free-throws followed by an Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) layup, closing the gap. The Golden Eagles would again play effectively on both ends of the court and extend their lead. Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) drilled a three-pointer towards the end of the quarter, followed by 2 Darian Evans (Irving, NY/Lake Shore) free throws to close out the quarter.
Down 55-29, D'Youville's offense saved their best quarter for last, outscoring Brockport 21-17. Alexis Smith had 7 points in the quarter with her sister Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) adding 2 of her own. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) cashed in her first bucket of the season and Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) added a three. The game would end with Brockport grabbing the victory 72-50.
"We executed better in the second half and need to build on that for the next game," said Head Coach Dan Glover.
D'Youville had 35 points in the second half compared to 15 in the first. Alexis Smith led the team with 14 points. Shannon Dougherty added 8 points to go with her team leading 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Off the bench, Darian Evans and Ali Cochrane each added 6 points.
On the early slow start to the season, Glover said "Rome wasn't built in a day."
He believes that the team needs to get "better at finishing and taking care of the ball."
Both Shannon Dougherty and Alexis Smith were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Spartans will head to Wells on Wednesday, November 18th to play the Express at 7pm.
