Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team earned their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon in their home opener against Alfred University, defeating the Saxons by the final score of 63-56.
Four different Spartans scored in the first quarter. Senior Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) scored the first 2 points of the quarter and the last 2 points of the quarter, with Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scoring 4 points of her own. The Saxons were effective in scoring on the inside with 6 made layups. Alfred University would lead 18-10 after the first 10 minutes.
As she did to open the game, Dougherty began the scoring in the second quarter as well. Along with Laguerre, the two combined for the first 11 points of the quarter for D'Youville and pulled the team within 3 of the Alfred lead. The Saxons would add 2 points back to their and go into the half with a 28-23 lead.
The Saxons would miss their first 3 shot attempts of the third quarter and gave D'Youville an opportunity to get right back into the game. Senior Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) seized that opportunity and drilled a three-pointer and the Spartans trailed 28-26. Marino then hit another three slightly over 2 minutes later and then freshman Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) began to help shoulder the offensive load.
Smith hit two free throws and a layup in a matter of less than a minute to help give D'Youville a 35-31 lead. Dougherty added 4 additional points and 2 points were added by Jordan's older sister Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and the team had a 39-33 lead with 2:22 to go in the third. The Spartan offense would go cold for the remainder of the half and Alfred would take advantage, scoring 6 unanswered and the two teams would head to the fourth quarter tied at 39.
The three big scorers of the fourth quarter for D'Youville would continue to push the team in the fourth. Dougherty started off the quarter again by scoring first, this time with an and-one to give the Spartans their lead back. She then followed up with 3 more points off a three-pointer and D'Youville had a 45-41 lead.
Jordan Smith and Marino then took some of the scoring load away from Shannon, scoring the next 7 points and had D'Youville up 52-50 with 4:53 remaining in the game. Alfred would come back and tie the game at 56, but D'Youville locked down on both ends of the court. Dougherty gave D'Youville the lead for the final time on a layup and then iced the game with 2 clutch free throws with 12 seconds left as the Spartans got their first win of the season, defeating Alfred University 63-56.
Shannon Dougherty had her best game of the season, scoring 25 points and was 7-7 from the line. Her game not was only on the scoring end, but Shannon added 4 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Freshman Jordan Smith had a breakout game, scoring a big 12 points off the bench and was a perfect 6-6 from the line. Smith scored big baskets in pressure situations throughout the game and was key in the Spartan's first win.
Alexis Smith nearly missed a double-double, grabbing a team high 11 rebounds and scoring 8 points. Fellow senior captain and senior Danette Laguerre also had 8 points and led the team with 5 steals. The third captain, Sarah Marino, chipped in with 9 points and led the team with 5 assists. She also added 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
D'Youville won the battles in smaller areas of the game. They forced 25 turnovers and scored 23 points off those turnovers. They only gave the ball away 7 times the entire game and the team was 88.9% from the line.
The women will play their next game on Tuesday, November 24th at home against Alfred State. The game begins at 6pm.
