Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team won their second consecutive game of the season on Tuesday evening by defeating the visiting Alfred State Pioneers in overtime by the final score of 71-63.
D'Youville's offense got off to a slow start in the game. Freshman Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) score the first basket of the game for the Spartans but the team would struggle to score after that. Thanks to three Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) free throws in the final minute, D'Youville pulled to within 7 of the Pioneers and trailed 18-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Spartans would begin to get their footing on the offensive end behind the team's leading scorer, Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West). Shannon scored or assisted on 3 of the first 4 baskets for D'Youville in the second quarter. Senior captain Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) was a key player as well as she hit a three pointer with 1:44 left in the quarter to draw D'Youville within 2 points of Alfred State's lead. Marino would strike again from behind the arc with 9 second left and tie the game at 30 heading into the half.
The third quarter was dominated by the D'Youville seniors. Dougherty and Laguerre combined to give the Spartans a 35-32 lead early in the third, with Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) adding a layup to extend their lead to 5. Alfred State pulled within 2 just 1:03 to go in the third but Laguerre hit another free throw to extend her team's lead going into the fourth.
After the Pioneers fought back to take a 2 point lead from a three pointer with 3:56 remaining in regulation, freshman Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) came right back down and drilled a three of her own to give D'Youville the 56-55 lead. Dougherty then scored the final 5 points for the Spartans in regulation, tying the game at 61 and taking the game to overtime.
As overtime began, it was clear the Spartans were the hungrier team. Jordan Smith opened the scoring in the overtime and Alfred State tied the game 40 seconds later, but those two points would be the only points the Pioneers would score for the rest of the game. Out of the final 8 points they scored, 6 came from the free throw line for D'Youville. Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) iced the game with 33 seconds left as the Spartans won their second straight game, defeating Alfred State by the final of 71-63.
Senior Shannon Dougherty was once again stellar for D'Youville. She led the team with 28 points while also grabbing 6 rebounds and recording 2 assists and 2 steals. Shannon has scored 25-plus points in her last two games, which have both been wins.
Jordan Smith continued to carve a spot in the lineup by recording her first double-double on Tuesday. In her first start of the season, the freshman scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds after recording a career high 12 points in the last game. Danette Laguerre also had a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 of her own rebounds. She also had 6 steals to lead the team.
Sarah Marino has been a contributor in every aspect of the game this season. She scored 8 points on Tuesday evening with 7 rebounds and a team high 4 assists. Alexis Smith had 6 points and 7 rebounds in the game.
The women made an effort to go to the basket and it showed as they shot 31 free throws compared to just 3 by the Pioneers. D'Youville also shot a better field goal and three-point percentage than their opponent on Tuesday.
D'Youville will hit the road this weekend as they play their final game before conference play begins against SUNY Canton on Sunday, November 29th at 3pm.
