Canton, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team won their third straight game on Sunday afternoon be defeating the SUNY Canton Kangaroos by the final score of 69-58.
D'Youville started off the game by playing outstanding on both ends of the court. Three of the team's four seniors, Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West), Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) and Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored the first three baskets for the Spartans. With 5 minutes passed in the first quarter, the Spartans led Canton 12-4 but saved their best offense for the second portion of the quarter.
The Spartans would heat up from behind the arc as the first quarter came to a close. Dougherty hit one followed by back-to-back threes from freshman Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack). Returning from injury, junior Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) hit the team's fourth consecutive three following another from Dougherty. Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) sank a free throw to close out the first quarter with D'Youville taking a commanding 29-10 lead.
Quarter number two wasn't quite the offensive explosion as the first for the Spartans. Freshman Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had 5 points in the quarter, as she continued to be a key contributor in the Spartan lineup. D'Youville was outscored 18-9 going into the final 30 seconds of the quarter, but Dougherty and Marino scored late baskets to keep the Spartan lead well out in front as they led 42-30 at halftime.
D'Youville's seniors took over the scoring load in the third quarter, with all but 2 of their 18 points in the quarter coming from the veterans. Canton would close their deficit to 9 points with 7:54 to go in the quarter, but three seniors pulled the Spartans to a 16 point lead. Alexis Smith scored a layup followed by two Marino free throws and a layup from Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) gave D'Youville a 51-35 lead with 6:49 remaining in the quarter. The Spartans would hold firm for the remainder of the quarter and head into the fourth with a 60-45 lead.
The Kangaroos would make the game interesting as they trailed by 8 with 8:17 remaining in the game. After D'Youville would get their lead back up to 10, Canton would again put pressure on the Spartan lead and close the game to 6 points with 3:26 to go. However, Alexis Smith would come through for her team scoring 5 unanswered points and give D'Youville an 11 point lead. That lead would hold true to the end as the Spartans would defeat SUNY Canton by the final score of 69-58.
"Really great team effort in today's win," said Head Coach Dan Glover. "Happy to see our bench step up and make some shots which really propelled us in today's victory," he continued.
