D'Youville's Comeback Falls Short As Behrend Breaks Spartan's Winning Streak

Buffalo, NY – Following their three game winning streak, the D'Youville women's basketball team lost to the visiting Penn State-Behrend Lions in their conference opener Wednesday evening by the final of 58-55.

The Spartans started the first quarter very strong on offense. Senior Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) scored the first 5 points for D'Youville, and Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) added a three of her own to give the team an 8-7 lead. As the quarter wound down, the Lions would get to within a point of the Spartan lead, but points from Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) would give the Spartans a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Right out of the gate in the second quarter, Behrend would score 7 unanswered points and take a 20-16 lead with 6:35 remaining in the quarter. Dougherty would make it a 1 point game but the Lions were too much for the Spartans all quarter long as they continued to pour on the offense and ended the half with a 30-22 lead.

Alexis Smith made her presence known to begin the third quarter as she scored 6 of the team's first 8 points and D'Youville trailed 34-31 with just under 3 minutes ticked off the clock. As the Spartans seemed to get closer, the Lions would pull back away. Getting to within 6, Behrend then went on a 7-0 scoring streak in the final 2 minutes of the third and led 50-37 heading into the final quarter.

D'Youville was down by 13 to begin the quarter but made a ferocious comeback and took the game to the end. The 4 senior Spartans would score the first 14 points of the quarter for D'Youville. Without allowing a point for the first 8:13 of the quarter, D'Youville powered their way back into the game and Dougherty tied the game with 2:12 remaining. Behrend jumped out to a 2 point lead but Korona would then tie it back up with a layup. The Lions would take a 56-53 lead with 10 seconds, but Korona would hit 2 free throws with 8 seconds left and the Spartans would trail 56-55. However, the clock was against D'Youville and they would lose the game 58-55.

Alexis Smith had her best offensive game of the season, scoring 17 points and shooting 7-10 from the field. Shannon Dougherty was the second leading scorer with 13 points, adding 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. As she has done all season, Sarah Marino contributed in all aspects of the game. Marino scored 8 points with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a team high 5 steals.

Playing strongly off the bench was Jean-Ann Korona, who had 11 points and a team high 7 rebound and 4 assists. She also added 4 steals and a block. Senior Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) had 6 points of her own with 3 assists and 2 steals.

The women will hit the road for their first conference road game this Saturday, December 5th at Pitt.-Greensburg. The game will begin at 3pm.
