D'Youville Comeback Falls Short At Greensburg

Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first conference road loss of the season on Saturday afternoon to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats by the final of 74-57.

D'Youville's offense struggled in the first quarter of the game. The Spartans scored their second point of the game with 1:32 to go in the first quarter, but their defense kept them in the game as they trailed 9-2. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored right at the end of the first quarter and the Spartans trailed 15-6 after one quarter.

The second quarter was a similar story for D'Youville. Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) converted an and-one 3:30 into the second quarter and the Spartans trailed 19-11. For the next 5:31, D'Youville went scoreless until Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored back-to-back layups in the final minute and D'Youville went into halftime trailing 34-15.

In the third quarter, D'Youville would begin to close the gap. Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) scored 5 points in the quarter to lead the team and D'Youville climbed back in the game and cut their deficit to 14 entering the fourth quarter.

Wirth continued to break through in the fourth, scoring 6 of the team's first 8 points and bringing the Spartans to within 9. Alexis Smith also scored her scoring touch, putting up 5 points in the first 3:30 of the final quarter. D'Youville nearly completed the comeback as they got to within 3 of the Bobcat lead at the 5:09 mark with Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) making a layup and the Spartans trailed 52-48.

However the late comeback, Greensburg would be too much for D'Youville. Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) had 7 fourth quarter points but the Bobcats would pull away late and win the game by the final of 74-57.

Alexis Smith led the team again with 15 points in the game. Her 5 rebounds tied for the team high with Jean-Ann Korona. Colleen Wirth scored 11 points off the bench and was the second leading scorer on the team. Shannon Dougherty had 8 points and a team high 2 assists.

In the game, Alexis Smith scored her 1,000th point for the Spartans. Smith is the second player in the last two season to reach the historic mark. She is the second leading scorer on the team this season, averaging 12.2 PPG.

The women will next play on Saturday, December 12th at La Roche at 3pm.
