Women Suffer Big Loss Against La Roche

Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team was defeated by the conference leading La Roche Redhawks Saturday afternoon by the final score of 102-50.

La Roche's high powered offense was on full display in the first quarter. The Redhawks scored 19 points before D'Youville's first basket with 4:48 left in the first. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) made a jumper to give the Spartans their first points. Freshman Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) closed out the quarter with a jumper of her own, but La Roche had a commanding 33-4 lead over the Spartans at the end of the first.

The second quarter was started off by the four D'Youville seniors each scoring their first points of the game. Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West), Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) all scored layups to go with a three-pointer from Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy). The Spartans would be a different team in the second, outscoring La Roche 18-11 and trailed going into halftime 44-22.

The Redhawks scoring prowess would extend into the second half as they took a 70-36 lead with 2:38 left in the third quarter. At the end of the quarter, La Roche led D'Youville 75-40.

Finishing off what they started from the tip, the Redhawks played a strong fourth quarter and defeated the Spartans by the final score of 102-50.

Jean-Ann Korona led the team with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Danette Laguerre and Alexis Smith each had 8 points in the game, while Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) led the team with 3 assists. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) had 4 points in her most game action of the season. Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) had 3 rebounds, 2 points and 2 steals in her return to the starting lineup.

The Spartans will play their final game before break on Monday, December 14th at Hilbert. Game time is 8pm.
