Hilbert Hands Loss To D'Youville Heading Into Winter Break

Hamburg, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team fell to the Hilbert Hawks in their final game before winter break on Monday evening by the final score of 59-42.

Senior Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) hit a three-pointer to start the scoring for the Spartans and cut their deficit in half. The Hawks began to establish an early lead over D'Youville and took a 14-4 lead with 3:50 to go in the first quarter. Down 16-6 lead with less than a minute to go, Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) hit a three-pointer and D'Youville trailed 16-9 at the end of the first.

The second quarter showcased the Spartan's ability to shoot from beyond the arc. As she did to begin the first, Marino hit another three to begin the second. Junior Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) made her first field goal of the game following Marino's three. To end the quarter, Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) hit back-to-back threes and D'Youville trailed 32-20 at halftime.

Simone continued to make an impact as the third quarter began as she hit her third three-pointer of the night to start the D'Youville scoring in the second half. After a Korona layup with 4:59 in the quarter, D'Youville would go scoreless until 28 seconds remained in the third. Marino scored 3 late points with under 30 seconds left and cut the Spartan deficit to 44-32.

D'Youville would close their deficit to 10 after a Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) with 8:58 left in the game. The Spartans would do their best to get back in the game as Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored a layup with 4:21 to go, but Hilbert would extend their lead and close out the game, winning by the score of 59-42.

Sarah Marino was the team's leading scorer with 11 points. Hannah Simone added 9 points in the game, all on three-pointers. Senior Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) led the team with 7 assists and added 3 steals. Jean-Ann Korona led the team with 5 steals to go with 6 points and 2 rebounds. Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had a team high 4 rebounds.

The women will next play in the new year on Saturday, January 2nd at Houghton at 4pm. Following that game, the women will return home on Wednesday, January 6th to play the Medaille Mavericks at 8pm.
