Houghton, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team was back in action and started off 2016 with a loss to the host Houghton Highlanders Saturday afternoon by the final score of 72-57.
Houghton grabbed an early 4-0 lead to begin the first quarter until Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) combined to tie the game at 4. The Highlanders got back out in front of the Spartans with a 10-4 lead, with D'Youville closing the deficit to 4 just a few minutes later. With D'Youville in reach of the lead, Houghton went on a 9-0 scoring run to end the first quarter, leading the Spartans 19-8.
Both teams put up large offensive numbers in the second quarter. Dougherty opened up the scoring with a three-pointer, but Houghton would answer back with 7 unanswered points. D'Youville trailed 32-13 over half way through the second but began to chip away at the Highlander lead. Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had 4 points to go with 4 from Dougherty and 3 from Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and D'Youville cut their deficit to 16, trailing Houghton 40-24 at halftime.
D'Youville pulled themselves back into the game in the third quarter. Down by 16 to begin the second half, the Spartans closed the gap to 10 with 2:39 to go in the third. As the quarter wound down, Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) converted an and-one, bringing D'Youville to within 7 points at 49-42. At the end of the third quarter, Houghton was led D'Youville 53-42.
Smith began the fourth quarter by continuing the momentum she had started in the third. Alexis scored the first 6 points of the quarter and brought the Spartans to within 5 of the Highlanders. However, the D'Youville offense would become dormant after Smith's last basket as the Houghton offense same alive. The Highlanders scored 12 unanswered points to take back their commanding lead. D'Youville would try to get back into the game but would fall short, losing to Houghton by the final of 72-57.
Seniors Shannon Dougherty, Danette Laguerre and Alexis Smith led the team in scoring Saturday afternoon. Dougherty had 17 points followed by Laguerre's 13 and Smith's 9. Laguerre was the team leader in rebounds and assists, with 6 and 4. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) tied Danette with the team lead in rebounding with 6 of her own. Korona also added 7 points.
Darian Evans led all bench players with 3 rebounds. She had 4 points, tied with Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) for the team lead off the bench. Monica June chipped in with 3 points of her own.
The women will return home for their first conference game of the new year on Wednesday, January 6th at 8pm to play the Medaille Mavericks.
