Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team was defeated on their home court by the visiting Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 68-60 on Wednesday evening.
Trailing the Mavericks 6-2 after 2:13 of play, the Spartans worked back to tie the game at 11 following 4 consecutive points from Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West). Over the final 1:30 of the first quarter, Medaille would retake their lead, but Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored the final 4 points for D'Youville in the quarter to keep the game within reach. The first quarter would end with D'Youville trailing 19-15.
The second quarter was a slow start for both teams on offense. Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) scored the first points of the quarter with 6:41 to go on a three-pointer, cutting the Spartan deficit to just a point. For the first time in the game, D'Youville took the lead with 4:02 to go in the second quarter due to a made layup from Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville). Points from Dougherty and Korona gave the Spartans a 2 point lead but Medaille retook the lead and closed out the first half with a 31-30 lead.
Four points from senior Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) opened the third quarter and gave D'Youville the lead back at 34-31. The Spartans would go scoreless for nearly 5 minutes until Smith would score her third basket of the quarter, cutting their deficit to 5. Medaille's lead would grow to 9 but another layup from Smith closed the gap to 7 points as the Mavericks took a 52-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
After a 4 minute scoreless period between both teams, Medaille took their lead from 4 to 7 on a made three-pointer with 4:29 to go in the game. With an 8 point lead just over 3 minutes left to go, the Mavericks began to succumb to the D'Youville pressure. The Spartans took the ball to the basket at the end of the game, earning several trips to the line. With 1:49 left in the game, D'Youville trailed 60-57. Despite making the game close, the Mavericks were too much for the Spartans and were victorious by the score of 68-60.
Senior Alexis Smith was the team's leading scorer on the night she was acknowledged for scoring her 1,000th point. Her 17 points were followed by Jean-Ann Korona with 14. Korona added a team high 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Shannon Dougherty had 5 points, 3 rebounds and a team high 3 assists.
Freshman Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had a team high 5 rebounds and 5 points off the bench. Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) also had 5 rebounds and Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) added 2 points.
The women will host a back-to-back this weekend, starting with Mount Aloysius on Saturday at 3pm. On Sunday, Franciscan will visit, also playing at 3pm.
