Women Roll to Second Straight Conference Win

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team built on their first conference win Saturday by winning their second in impressive fashion Sunday, defeating the Franciscan Barons by the final score of 70-50.

Franciscan opened up the game with a 6-0 lead but the two stars of Saturday's game would pick up where they left off the previous day. Freshman Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) cut the Baron's lead in half with her first three-pointer of the game. Coming off scoring 21 points, Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored her first point of the game on a free-throw. On the next possession, Magee tied the game on a layup with 5:50 to go in the first.

The Barons would retake the lead on a three-pointer, but Alexis Smith would give the Spartans their first lead of the game with 3:12 to go in the quarter. Korona closed out the scoring in the first with two more free-throws and the Spartans would lead 11-10 after the first 10 minutes of play.

Quarter number two was highlighted by the D'Youville seniors. Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) scored the first points of the quarter with a three-pointer. She then hit another three two possessions later, with Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) adding a pair of free-throws in between. After Marino's second three, Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) got in on the action and hit a three of her own, giving D'Youville a 23-13 lead.

Alexis Smith made a layup, followed by 5 more combined points from Laguerre and Dougherty. The Spartans allowed only 7 points in the second quarter and took a commanding 34-18 lead into halftime.

To begin the second half, the Spartans continued to dominate on both ends of the court. D'Youville outscored the Barons 9-4 in the first 5 minutes of play, and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the game at 45-24 on her second straight basket. The freshmen continued to provide an offensive spark in the quarter as Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) hit two free-throws and Magee hit another three to close out the quarter, giving D'Youville a 52-28 lead.

The fourth quarter was more of the same from the D'Youville women. June continued to make an impact, scoring 5 points in extended actions. Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) also added 5 points in the quarter with Evans chipping in 2. The Spartans would go on to win the game over the Barons by the final of 70-50.

Danette Laguerre led the team in scoring with 12 points and tied for the team lead with 3 steals. After scoring a career high in points yesterday, Magan Magee had 10 points in her second consecutive start. Monica June scored a career high 9 points, showcasing her abilities in her career high in minutes. Jean-Ann Korona added 9 points and 6 rebounds.

Senior Shannon Dougherty made history by scoring her 1,000th point in the game, becoming the tenth player in women's basketball program history to do so. Dougherty scored 7 points and dished out a team high 4 assists. Sarah Marino and Alexis Smith each had 8 points, with Smith grabbing a team high 8 rebounds.

The women will hit the road for their next three games, with their first coming on Wednesday against the Pitt.-Bradford Bobcats. The game begins at 8pm.
