Panthers Take Down Spartans In First Game of Road Trip

Bradford, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team was defeated by the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers Thursday evening by the final score of 62-47.

Pitt.-Bradford led early on in the game, holding a 9-2 lead over the Spartans with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter. The Spartans battled back and trimmed the Panther lead to 2 following a 3-point play from breakout freshman Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack). With under a minute remaining in the quarter, Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) tied the game at 11 on a made jumper. However, Bradford would hit 2 late free-throws and end the first with a 13-11 lead.

The starting backcourt of Laguerre and Magee gave the Spartans an early lead in the second. Laguerre tied the game at 13, followed by a three from Magee to give D'Youville the lead. Bradford would retake the lead and go on a 12-0 scoring run, taking a 25-16 lead. Magee cut the Spartan's deficit to 5 with 1:38 remaining in the half, but the Panthers would extend their lead and go into the half with a 30-21 lead.

D'Youville immediately cut their deficit to 6 to start the second half. However, the Spartans went scoreless for nearly 5 minutes until Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) scored a jumper. Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) followed with a layup and the team was then down 12. Neither of the two teams scored in the final 2:13 of the third and the Panthers would take a 46-32 lead into the fourth.

The Spartans made up some ground in the fourth, scoring the first 5 points of the quarter. Bradford would take full control of the game with 3:16 left in the game as they took a 60-42 lead over D'Youville. Freshmen Magee, Evans and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) would score the final 5 points for D'Youville as the Spartans fell to the Panthers by the final score of 62-47.

D'Youville's backcourt led the team in several statistics. Danette Laguerre led the team in scoring with 15 points and steals with 4. Magan Magee was second on the team with 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) collected a team high 8 rebounds, followed by 7 from Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville).

Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored 5 points and had 5 rebounds off the bench, and her sister Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) started her third straight game. Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) tied for the team high with 2 assists and Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) added a rebound. Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) scored 2 points before leaving with an injury.

The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, January 16th at 3pm at Penn State-Altoona.
