Wirth Leads Offensive Charge As D'Youville Blows Out Greensburg

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team got back in the win column Saturday afternoon with a 78-55 blowout win over the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats.

Senior forward Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) shot well from the outside early on in the game as she scored the team's first points on a made jumper. Freshman Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) made layups on consecutive possessions to give the Spartans an 8-2 lead.

With 5:36 left in the first half, Greensburg cut the Spartan lead to 4 but D'Youville began to pull away once again. Alexis and sister Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) combined for 7 points in the final 5 minutes of the quarter and the Spartan defense stepped up allowing only 2 points in that same time span. D'Youville ended the first quarter with a layup from Wirth and the Spartans led 26-13 after one quarter.

D'Youville began the second quarter with 6 unanswered points, extending their lead to 32-13. The freshmen took over the scoring load with Jordan Smith, Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack), Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) and Wirth scored 11 straight points for the Spartans and the team took a commanding 41-23 lead.

Alexis Smith closed out the quarter with a made layup and the Spartans led at halftime 43-28.

To begin the third quarter, D'Youville's offense continued to roll, scoring the first 10 points, including 6 straight from Wirth. Senior Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) gave the Spartans a 23 on a made three-pointer with Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) giving D'Youville their largest lead of the game of at 26 with 1:15 left in the third. Greensburg trailed by 26 at the end of three at the Spartans led 66-40.

Sophomore Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) gave D'Youville a 29 point lead to start the fourth quarter on a made three. With under 2 minutes left in the game, Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored the final 5 points for the Spartans in the game as D'Youville closed out their dominating victory over the Bobcats by the final of 78-55.

Freshman Colleen Wirth had a career day with 18 points and 8 assists, which are both career highs and led the team on Saturday. Jean-Ann Korona added 14 points with Alexis Smith scoring 13. Off the bench, Sarah Marino had 8 points to go with her team high 6 rebounds. Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) had 6 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in the game. Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) chipped in with a rebound.

Of the 11 Spartans who saw action on Saturday, 10 of them scored at least 2 points. All but one player also grabbed at least a rebound.

D'Youville will host the Hilbert Hawks on Wednesday, January 27th at 8pm for their second game of their three game home stand.
