Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team won their fourth straight game on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Penn State-Altoona Lions 80-67, taking a big step in clinching a spot in the AMCC playoffs.
Altoona jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on the Spartans with under three minutes played in the game. Following a timeout, D'Youville got right back into the game with seven unanswered, led by five points from Collen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois). The Lions once again jumped up to an eight-point lead with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter, but the Spartans closed out the quarter strong and closed the deficit to two, trailing 20-18 after one.
Just under two minutes into the second quarter, the hero of last game, Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf), tied the game at 23 on her second three-pointer of the half. The Spartans then took their first lead of the game at 29-25 thanks to an Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) layup.
D'Youville began to pull away from the Altoona with five consecutive points from Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville), giving the Spartans 36-25 lead. The 11-point lead was their largest lead of the game. The Lions would close the gap to single digits with 1:13 remaining in the half and go into halftime trailing 42-35.
The second half began with D'Youville again opening up an 11-point lead over Altoona. However, the Lions would bring the Spartan lead to within three with 6:02 remaining in the quarter and trail 46-43. Just a little under four minutes later the Lions would pull to within one-point of the lead, but Darian Evans (Irving, NY/Lake Shore) knocked down a jumper to give D'Youville a cushion. With 0:29 remaining in the quarter, Altoona retook the lead at 56-55, but Smith would make a jumper of her own 0:10 later and the Spartans would end the third with a 57-56 lead.
To start the fourth quarter, D'Youville would give themselves a comfortable lead, scoring 13 of the first 15 points and leading 70-58 with 6:21 to go in the game. The Spartans would keep pouring on the offense, taking a 14-point lead into the final minute of play. The women would close out the fourth quarter with their lead in tact, winning the game by the final score of 80-67.
Leading the way in scoring was Colleen Wirth who recorded a career high 20 points. The freshman continued to make a major impact on the team, playing a team high 38 minutes and contributing seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Alexis Smith recorded a double-double with 16 points and a team high 13 rebounds.
Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) was second in scoring Sunday afternoon with 17 points and a team high five steals to go with five rebounds. Jean-Ann Korona missed her fourth straight double-double by a rebound after bringing in nine rebounds and scoring fifteen points.
After scoring a career high 10 points on Wednesday, Ali Cochrane followed up with eight points in a career high 19 minutes. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Darian Evans each added two points and Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added a rebound. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) tied for a team high with five assists.
The five D'Youville starters combined for 68 of the team's 80 points. Each of the starters recorded at least an assist and two rebounds and four of the five starters scored in double-figures. Each one of the five also tallied at least one steal.
The women will close out their regular season schedule on Saturday, February 20th at Franciscan.
