Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team saw their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon after falling to the top seeded La Roche Redhawks in the AMCC semifinals by the final score of 96-47.
Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) gave D'Youville an early 4-2 lead after scoring the first two baskets for the Spartans. After tying the game at six, La Roche began firing on both ends of the court, going on a 15-0 run and took a 21-6 lead with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) would add four points before the quarter would end but the Spartans would trail 27-12 at the end of one.
D'Youville opened the second quarter by cutting the deficit to 10. La Roche would then push on offense and open up a 20-point lead with 4:51 left in the half. The Redhawks closed out the second quarter and the half on a 9-0 run, holding the Spartans scoreless in the last 4:01 and they trailed 53-23 at half.
La Roche was still dominating on offense in the third quarter. They extended their lead to 35 but the Spartans held them scoreless in the final 1:35 of the quarter. The Redhawks led 73-38 at the end of three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, La Roche continued to score as they ended the Spartans season by defeating the Spartans by the final score of 96-47.
Freshman Colleen Wirth led the team with 10 points against the Redhawks. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) added nine points each in their season finale. Senior Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added eight points and a team high 11 rebounds. Smith also tied for a team high three assists and three rebounds.
Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) led the team in scoring off the bench with five points. She also added three assists and two rebounds.
