Women's Basketball Captures First Win Behind Several Career Highs

Brockport, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball season opened up with a win on Friday afternoon over the host Brockport Golden Eagles by the final score of 73-67.

Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) started off hot from behind the arc by hitting back-to-back threes for a 6-5 lead, with both assists going to Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack). Along with Simone, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lakeshore) powered the offense with early going as she had a pair of baskets sandwiched around Simone's third three of the first quarter. The two combined for a 13-12 lead before the Brockport offense came to life and they ended the first quarter with a 24-19.

The Spartans went down by eight just 1:52 into the second quarter until Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) hit a three to bring the team within five. Simone hit another three just a few minutes later coupled with a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) layup to tie the game at 30-30. Brockport then went up 34-32 before Korona and Simone scored the final baskets of the half and gave D'Youville the 36-34 lead.

Both teams traded the lead to start the third quarter. A pair of free throws from Korona gave the Spartans a 42-41 lead, followed by four straight points from June for a three point lead at 46-43. With 0:47 left in the third, the Golden Eagles took a 47-46 lead until Simone hit her fifth three of the game to send the Spartans into the fourth quarter up 49-47.

Brockport came out and tied the game at 49-49 with 8:57 left in the game. Magee hit a three to send the team up by three and the team's lead increased to six. With the Golden Eagles within two, Magee hit three free throws to go with an Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) three and the Spartans went up 63-57 with 3:35 to go. 

Sophomores Evans and June combined for the final 10 points of the quarter as D'Youville closed out the game to capture their first win of the season, defeating Brockport 73-67.

"Our team philosophy of heart really showed in today's game," said head coach Dan Glover. "Each day we work hard and put ourselves in a position to succeed. So proud of our girls and the effort and role each and everyone played today."

Three Spartans had career scoring performances for the team. Simone recorded a team high 17 points by shooting 5-7 from behind the arc. Evans scored 15 points to go with five rebounds. Off the bench, June scored a career high 13 points to go with two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Korona recorded her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, adding five assists. Magee led the team with five assists and five steals to go with her six points and three rebounds. Cochrane added seven points and four assists.

Off the bench, Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had three points with four rebounds. Freshman CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Howard) added four rebounds in her team debut.

D'Youville will play for the Brockport Tip-Off Classic championship tomorrow against Vassar at 3:45pm.
