Brockport, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season in the championship game of the Brockport Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon after they were defeated by the Vassar Brewers 75-43.
Vassar got off to a hot start in the first quarter, limiting the Spartan offense to two points in the first five minutes and scoring 13. Four different D'Youville players accounted for the team's seven total points in the first quarter as Brewers took a 23-7 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Vassar got the job done at both ends of the floor. The Spartans were limited to just two points up until Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) hit her first shot of the game with 2:06 to go in the first half as D'Youville trailed 36-12. Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) and Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) each added free throws to end the quarter as D'Youville trailed 41-15 going into the half.
The Spartans stepped up their scoring efforts in the third quarter. Monica Juna (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) led the way with six points, all coming from the line. D'Youville spread the ball around well with six different players recording at least a point. The quarter ended with the women behind Vassar 58-31.
D'Youville again showed a balanced offensive attack in the third, with every basket coming from a different Spartan. Cochrane and Simone each accounted for three points as the Brewers took their victory from start to finish, defeating the Spartans by the final of 78-43.
"Vassar is an elite team from a very good conference," said head coach Dan Glover. "They did everything well. We just didn't know down shots that we did yesterday. We need to find our level of consistency. We will learn from this."
Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) led the starters with eight points while June led bench scorers with eight as well. Both Magee and Cochrane scored seven points in the game, with Magee recording four rebounds and four steals. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) led the team and recorded her second straight game of double-digit rebounding with 12.
Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) added a combined a combined four points off the bench. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Morgan Lehman (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) each made their season debutes for the Spartans.
D'Youville will host their first game of the season on Monday, November 21st at 7pm in the College Center Gym. They will face off against Wells.
