Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team won by their biggest margin of the season Sunday afternoon thanks to a record shooting performance from the team, defeating the SUNY Canton Kangaroos by the final of 82-63.
D'Youville came out hot from behind the arc with Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) hit a pair of threes sandwiched around a Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) three. Canton stayed on pace with the Spartans as they held a 10-9 lead until Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) scored a layup followed by another Korona three to take a 14-10 lead.
Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) joined in on the action with 2:44 to go in the quarter with a three of her own, followed by two Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) free throws. Following a Kangaroo three with 0:10 left in the half, Magee heaved a three from three-quarters court as the buzzer sounded and hit nothing but net to give the Spartans a 24-18 lead.
The Spartans opened up the second quarter with their offense still on fire. The team outscored Canton 13-2 in the first 3:24 thanks to a three pointer from Simone and two from Cochrane. Freshman CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) added six points in the quarter and the Spartans ended the first half with a 50-29 lead.
Magee and Cochrane came out in the second half and again made an impact from behind the arc. They hit back-to-back threes to begin the half, but the team also got the job done from inside the paint. The last six baskets of the quarter all came from layups, with five different players scoring them. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored the final layup of the third quarter, giving the team a 24-point lead at 68-44.
As she had done in two of the previous three quarters, Magee started the scoring for D'Youville with a three. She hit another three with under four minutes remaining in the game, with Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Morgan Lehman (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) getting in on the action. June added a free throw with 0:05 left in the game as the Spartans would win their second game of the season by the final score of 82-63.
"We played a great team game offensively," said head coach Dan Glover. "I am so happy with the confidence that we played with. With that being said, we still have some work to do on the defensive end of the court, but a win is a win and we ready to move forward."
Magee had a career game for her team. She scored a career high 21 points, all on three pointers, and added a team high seven assists. Four other Spartans were in double figures, including two with career highs. Cochrane scored a career high with 15 points, while Korona added 15 points of her own. Howard had 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench, both career highs.
Five players had two steals in the game, while Evans and Simone led the starters with five rebounds. Evans had a team high four blocks. Off the bench, Lehman had three assists and four points, both career highs. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) played valuable minutes for the women as well.
The team shot an outstanding 46.0% from the field and 45.7% from behind the arc. Their 1 made threes is a program record.
The next game for the women will come on Wednesday, November 30th as D'Youville will open their conference schedule against Penn State-Behrend. Tip-off between the Spartans and Lions will be at 6pm.
