Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team won their second straight game and third overall this season after defeating the Penn State-Behrend Lions in their conference opener, 59-51.
D'Youville was out to an early 6-2 lead following an Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) three, but Behrend scored 15 unanswered points to take a 17-6 lead with 0:50 remaining in the first quarter. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) sank a pair of free throws with 0:05 to go in the first, trimming the team's deficit to nine.
In the second quarter, the Spartans got the first basket after 2:19 of play off a Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) three, followed by a Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) layup to bring D'Youville to within four. However Behrend would go back up by nine at 26-16 before D'Youville's defense helped them get back into the game.
The Spartans allowed four points in the final 3:14 of the quarter. Korona, Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) all hit free throws in the final minute of the quarter, bringing the score to 29-23 at the end of the first half.
Behrend extended their lead to 11 with 2:17 off the clock in the third quarter, but D'Youville would begin to make a run at their lead. Baskets from four different players pulled D'Youville to within four at 39-35 and then Korona hit back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 39-39. The Lions then went on their own scoring run of eight unanswered to take a 47-39 lead into the fourth and final quarter of play.
Korona and June combined for the first six points of the fourth quarter and D'Youville was back within four with 6:28 to go. Four straight points from Simone tied the game at 49 until Behrend took the lead right back. On their next trip down, Korona drilled a three for the Spartans first lead since the first quarter.
D'Youville's defense would be lock-down for the remaining 2:53 as they did not allow Behrend to score. Following her three to take the lead, Korona added five more points to go with two points from Evans as the Spartans closed out their first conference victory of the season, 59-51 over the Lions.
Korona led the way for the team with 26 points, a new career high. She also brought in a team high seven rebounds and dished out a team high five assists. She added five steals, tying with Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) for the team lead. Magee had four assists in the game, tied with Evans with also had 10 points and five boards.
Cochrane was strong in all facets of the game on Wednesday. She had three points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals. Simone chipped in with nine points, three steals and two rebounds.
June and Howard offered valuable minutes off the bench with five points each. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had two rebounds to add as well.
The women will travel to Mount Aloysius for their next game on Saturday, December 3rd. The game will begin at 1pm.
