Mounties Hand Spartans First Conference Loss

Cresson, PA - The D'Youville women's basketball team lost their first conference game of the season early Saturday afternoon, falling to the Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 87-68.

Mount Aloysius had a strong offensive output in the first quarter with a 16-5 lead with 4:20 elapsed on the clock. Sophomores Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) tried to get the offense going in the final 2:30 of play with their first baskets of the game, but the Mounties built a large lead. With 0:39 to go in the quarter, Mount Aloysius took their largest lead at 14 points and ended the quarter with a 25-11 lead.

In the second quarter, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) was the main source of offense, scoring eight points. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) added two free throws with 2:10 to go in the quarter and the Spartans went into halftime trailing the Mounties 42-26.

D'Youville began to heat up from beyond the arc in the third quarter, making four in total. Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) hit an early three to cut the score to 46-29, followed by a three from Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) and a second from Cochrane. Mount Aloysius led 67-39 with 0:28 left in the quarter before Korona hit a three in the final seconds and the Spartans trailed 67-42.

The Mounties continued to play well at both ends of the floor into the fourth quarter. They opened up a 29-point lead with 6:35 to play in the game before a Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) made three. Simone closed out the game with the final three points for her team as the Spartans fell to the Mounties by the final of 87-68.

Korona led the Spartans in scoring for the second straight game with 15 points, adding four assists to lead the starters. She also had 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Also recording her second double-double of the season was Evans who grabbed a team high 11 rebounds to go with 12 points.

Having strong all-around games were Magee and Cochrane. Magee scored seven points with a team high four steals to go with five rebounds and three assists. Cochrane scored in double-figures with 10 points, adding four rebounds and had two assists. June had a team high eight points off the bench and led the team with five assits. Smith added seven points.

The women will return home for their next game on Saturday, December 10th to host the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats at 1pm.
