Women's Basketball Defeats Greensburg For Second Conference Win

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team got their second conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats by the final of 67-59.

Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) were the early sources of offense for D'Youville in the first quarter. Simone started off the game with back-to-back threes, followed by the next seven points coming from Korona. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) each scored to bring the Spartans's point total to 17, with the Bobcats bringing the score to within three at 17-14 to end the first quarter.

The Spartan's post players played a big role for the team in the second quarter. Freshman forward CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) scored back-to-back baskets to give D'Youville a 23-18 lead with 6:47 left in the second. After trailing for the first time in the game at 26-25, forward Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) had two baskets to go with two June layups and the Spartans went into halftime with the lead once again, up 33-28.

Korona and Simone helped start the team off right in the third quarter, scoring the first seven points of the third for a 40-28 lead. Junior guard Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) hit a pair of threes, pushing the team's lead to 11. Greensburg came back to tie the game at 46-46 with 2:25 to go in the third until Smith scored five straight points to go with a Korona jumper as the Spartans went into the fourth quarter with a 53-46 lead.

The Bobcats answered in the fourth, scoring the first six points of the quarter to pull within a point of D'Youville's lead. That was until Cochrane hit back-to-back threes for the second time in as many quarters, giving the team a needed cushion. With 5:43 left in the game, Evans made a jumper to make the game 61-54 D'Youville. Clutch free throws from Simone, Cochrane and Korona helped seal the game for the Spartans as they defeated Greensburg by the final of 67-59.

"Today was a good conference battle," said head coach Dan Glover. "Coach Eaton and her squad played a tough game. Fortunately for us, we were able to weather a couple runs by the Bobcats and hit some big-time shots down the stretch."

Continuing her recent stretch of strong performances, Korona led the team in scoring with 19 points. She was a rebound shy of her second straight double-double, leading the team with nine. Her all-around performance continued as she led the team with seven steals and five assists.

Cochrane also had another big offensive performance, scoring double-figures for the second straight game. She had 13 points, followed by Simone with 10 points and five rebounds. Evans chipped in with six points, six rebounds and three big blocks. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) contributed all over the court with five steals, four assists and four rebounds.

Off the bench, Smith had her highest point total of the season with nine points. June added six points with Howard scoring four points and bringing in four rebounds.

Taking care of the ball was a major factor behind the Spartan's win on Saturday. The team had 12 turnovers compared to Greensburg's 22. D'Youville also had 15 steals to the Bobcat's seven. Coach Glover credits that as a big reason for the team's success.

"We did a much better job today at valuing the basketball," said Glover. "That was a huge key to our success."

The women will play their final conference game before the winter break on Monday, December 12th. D'Youville will travel to Hilbert to play the Hawks, with tip-off at 6pm.
