Hamburg, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team dropped to 2-2 in conference play this season as they fell to the Hilbert Hawks Monday evening by the final score of 69-56.
D'Youville's offense got off to a slow start in the first quarter of play. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored the first basket for the Spartans after 1:52 of play. Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) then hit the next jumper at the 4:04 mark of the first as the team trailed 8-5. Hilbert would then go on a 14-2 scoring run in the final 3:43 and they led 22-7 at the end of the first.
The scoring load was shouldered by Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) and Korona in the second quarter. The two combined for all nine points in the quarter as D'Youville trailed the Hawks 30-16 at halftime.
The third quarter was a completely different story for D'Youville. Scoring the first seven points of the quarter, D'Youville's 13-0 scoring run was capped off Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) hitting back-to-back threes as the Spartans pulled back to within one at 30-29. Hilbert maintained their lead over the next several minutes, as the Spartans were within two points with 3:12 to go in the quarter. The Hawks would regain some of their earlier lead as the quarter progressed and they ended the third with a 47-38 advantage.
To open the fourth, June hit a three-point play to pull the Spartans back to within six, but the Hawks went back up by 13 with 4:43 to go in the game. However with a Korona layup exactly two minutes later, D'Youville pulled back to a six-point deficit at 60-54. Despite overcoming their early slow start, the Spartans were not able to come all the way back against Hilbert as the Hawks defeated D'Youville 69-56.
As she has done over the last three games, Korona led the team in scoring on Monday. Her 21 points added to another strong all-around performance as she grabbed six rebounds and had four steals. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) led the team with seven rebounds and was the team's second leading scorer with eight points.
Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) and Simone each had seven points and five rebounds in the game. Magee led the team with five steals and four assists, adding two rebounds and six points. Off the bench, June had seven points and five rebounds.
The next game for the women will come after Christmas as they will travel to Salem State for the Salem State Holiday Classic. Their first game of the tournament will come on Thursday, December 29th at 3pm against the host Salem State, with their second game coming on Friday, December 30th.
