Women Fall to Salem State in Opener of Salem State Winter Classic

Salem, MA - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a loss in their first game back from winter break to the host Salem State Vikings by the final score of 72-61.

Salem State led in the first two minutes of the game until Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) tied the game at 6-6 with a made free throw. The Vikings would go up 8-6 and 10-8 but each time the Spartans would answer to tie the game. D'Youville would take their first lead of the game at 13-12 with a Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) made three with 2:24 to go in the first quarter. Ending the quarter strong, Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) each scored layups in the final minute to give the Spartans a 17-14 lead at the end of the first.

D'Youville continued to maintain their lead as the second quarter went on. Salem pulled to within one point at 19-18, but Monice June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) extended the lead to three once again with a good layup. Neither team would score over the next three minutes until Morgan Lehman (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) scored a layup for a 23-18 D'Youville lead. Only four points would be scored between the two teams in the remainder of the quarter as D'Youville went into the half leading 24-21.

To open the second half, the Vikings cut their deficit to two until Korona hit back-to-back threes to increase the Spartan lead to 33-25. Salem continued to put pressure on the Spartans but Korona would help maintain a seven-point lead with back-to-back baskets yet again. However with 1:28 remaining in the third, the Vikings tied the game at 45-45 and then went on to take a five-point lead with under a minute left. The teams would trade free throws in the final 0:30 as Salem led after three quarters 52-49.

The first basket of the fourth quarter wouldn't come until 2:35 came off the clock with a made three by the Vikings. Scoring nine of the first 12 points of the quarter, Salem jumped out to a 61-52 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the game. With 0:45 to go in the game, the Spartans fell to a 14-point deficit and did not have a chance to come back, falling to Salem State by the final score of 72-61.

Korona led the team in scoring, tying her season and career high with 26 points. Sophomore forward Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) led the team with eight rebounds to go with three steals, tying Magee for the team lead. Korona added seven rebounds with Smith bringing in six.

Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) scored seven points in the game along with Howard who brought in four rebounds. June scored a team high 10 points off the bench and was tied for the team lead in assists with Magee with four. Lehman and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) each played increased minutes in the game.

The next game for the women comes tomorrow at 1pm against Bates.
