Spartans Can't Edge Bobcats in Salem State Tournament Finale

Salem, MA - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their second loss in as many days as they fell to the Bates Bobcats Friday afternoon by the final score of 70-45.

Bates was sharp behind the arc to begin the game, hitting back-to-back three pointers. After 2:30 of play, the Bobcats led 10-2 before the Spartans came back to trail by two after a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) made jumper. The Bobcats would pushed their lead to five to end the first quarter as they led 15-10.

In the second quarter, D'Youville was led by sophomore Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) with three points over the first 4:06 of play. Bates began to pull away to the tune of a 23-13 lead until Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored seven straight to bring the game to 26-20 with 2:23 to play in the half. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) pulled the game to within five but the Bobcats scored again to beat the buzzer, heading into the half with a 30-23 lead.

The Spartans were within six after a pair of Korona free throws in the third quarter, but Bates scored 10 unanswered points to take a 44-28 lead with 4:04 to go in the third. The Bobcats would score again with 1:30 left in the quarter, increasing their lead to 51-34 and take their 17-point lead into the final quarter of play.

Just over two minutes into the fourth, Bates pulled out to a 20-point lead over D'Youville. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) scored the first nine points of the fourth for the team in an effort to make the game close, however it was not enough as Bates went on to defeat D'Youville by the final score of 70-45.

Korona continued to lead the team in scoring as she was the only Spartan in double-figures, leading the team with 18 points. She also led the team with nine rebounds, adding two steals and two assists. June scored seven points, second on the team and leading all reserve players. All five starters recorded at least three rebounds, with Magee and Evans each recording five.

Smith scored five points off the bench, while Cochrane dished out a team high three assists. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) scored six points to go with three rebounds and a team high three blocks in her first start of the season. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Morgan Lehman (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) each played valuable minutes.
