Alfred, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost their final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to the Alfred State Pioneers by the final score of 74-63.
Alfred State had the early advantage in the first quarter as the Pioneers were out to a 10-1 lead with 4:29 elapsed in the quarter. Less than a minute later, Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) drilled a three to cut the Pioneer lead in half. With 1:53 remaining in the quarter, the Spartans closed the gap to a four as they trailed 14-10 after a Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack). D'Youville would end the first still down by four with the score being 16-12.
The Pioneers' lead was cut to two after a Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) made jumper just less than three minutes into the second. Over the next three minutes, the Spartans would be outscored 13-1 as Alfred State took a 31-17 lead. With less than two minutes remaining in the half, D'Youville trailed by eight and their deficit extended to nine as Alfred State went into the half with a 36-27 lead.
To start the second half, the Pioneers extended their lead to 11 at 40-29. That lead increased to 14 but was cut to nine until a Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) made jumper. Alfred State was able to maintain a steady lead as they again got up by 13 points with 1:19 to go in the third. A late basket with 0:06 in the third allowed the Pioneers to take a 56-44 advantage into the fourth.
D'Youville was able to bring the score back under 10 and then down to seven thanks to four consecutive points from Korona with 6:22 points remaining in the game. However, Alfred State was able to regain a double-digit lead and would defeat the Spartans by the final score of 74-63.
The women had three players scoring in double-figures, led by Korona's 18 points. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored a season high 10 points while Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) also had 10 points. Evans added nine points to go with a team high eight rebounds. Smith and Korona each had six rebounds and an assist.
Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) had a team high five steals to go with seven points off the bench. Magee added six points, while Campbell scored three points and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) added an assist and rebound.
The next game for the women comes on Saturday, January 7th at 1pm as they host the Franciscan Barons.
