Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon by defeating the Franciscan Barons by the final score of 64-47.
D'Youville took a double-digit lead with under five minutes to go in the first quarter thanks to three consecutive threes on three straight possessions by Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack). Korona added a pair of three throws to go with a three from Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) with 0:03 remaining to give the Spartans a 20-5 lead after one quarter of play.
Magee and Korona continued to remain hot from behind the arc as they scored the first two baskets of the second quarter to give D'Youville a 26-10 just under half way through. The Spartans were extremely efficient from the line as halftime neared with four different players going 2-2 from the line. Magee hit a pair from the charity stripe with 0:07 to go in the half, giving 39-14 lead over Franciscan after 20 minutes of play.
The Spartan offense continued to roll into the third quarter of play. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) gave the team a 32-point lead with 4:59 to play in the third. Franciscan closed the gap to 24 before Korona hit another three to extend the score to 54-27 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Sophomore Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored a pair of baskets in the fourth quarter; helping give her team a 62-36 lead with 4:38 to play in the game. The Barons scored five straight baskets to reduce their deficit to 16. However, the Spartan's lead was too much for Franciscan to overcome as they would fall to D'Youville by the final score of 64-47.
Korona led the team yet again with 22 points. She tied Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) with eight rebounds to lead the team. Smith added 10 points while Magee and June each chipped in with eight. Magee led the team with five assists in the game.
Cochrane and Evans each had six points while Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) played her highest number of minutes of the season with 17. She recorded three rebounds and two assists. Every Spartan grabbed at least three rebounds in the game.
D'Youville will play next on Monday, January 9th as they travel to Pitt.-Bradford to play the Panthers at 6pm.
