Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a conference loss on Saturday afternoon, losing to the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 100-53.
After reaching out to a seven-point lead to start the game, D'Youville trimmed the Redhawk's lead to 9-5 after a Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) made three pointer. La Roche then went on a 12-0 scoring run for a 21-7 lead with 2:44 remaining in the first quarter of play. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored her second basket of the quarter as the Redhawks led 24-9 at the end of one.
D'Youville's offense produced at a higher level in the second quarter. Smith scored five of the first 10 points for the Spartans as the deficit was cut to 13 nearly half way through the quarter. However La Roche would go on another scoring run with four straight layups and they would double up D'Youville at 42-21 with 3:10 to go in the half. The half would end with the same score differential as the Redhawks led the Spartans 48-27.
The third quarter was rather similar to the first for D'Youville. La Roche outscored them 14-5 in the first 7:10 of the third for a 62-32 lead. More of the same would occur through the rest of the quarter as the Redhawks ended the third with a 72-35 advantage.
Senior Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and freshman CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) led the scoring push in the fourth. The two combined for 12 of the 18 points in the quarter, but the La Roche lead was insurmountable as D'Youville fell to La Roche by the final score of 100-53.
Korona led the team in scoring with 14 points and rebounds with eight. Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds while Howard was a big contributor off the bench, scoring nine points to go with four rebounds. Magee led the team with five assists while Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scored eight points, six rebounds and recorded a team high four blocks.
The next game for the women comes on Sunday, January 15th as D'Youville visits Penn State-Altoona at 1pm.
