Altoona, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team got back on the winning track Sunday afternoon, defeating the Penn State-Altoona Lions by the final score of 69-63.
Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) got the scoring started for the Spartans by putting the first five points on the board. D'Youville then took a 10-6 lead off a Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) made three before Altoona would pull ahead with 4:53 left in the quarter. The Spartans would regain their lead with under two minutes remaining after four straight points from Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and D'Youville would lead 16-15 after the first quarter of play.
The Spartans lead grew to six to start the second half, but came back down to one after 4:53 of play. D'Youville went on a 12-2 scoring run for the rest of the quarter, taking an 11-point lead into halftime. Cochrane and Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) combined to score all 12 of the team's points, with Cochrane scoring eight of them. The Lions trailed D'Youville 37-26 after 20 minutes.
Starting the third quarter where they left off in the second, D'Youville scored the first seven points of the quarter to take 44-26 lead over the Lions. The Spartans would continue to hold their lead over Altoona after the team went up by 17 following a Korona layup with 3:39 in the third. Within 15 points with less than a minute to go, Cochrane scored another five consecutive points for D'Youville to give the women a 59-39 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Altoona came out and was extremely effective on both sides of the ball in the fourth. They scored 14 unanswered points to close the deficit to six with 3:37 remaining in the game. D'Youville did not score their first points until the 2:08 mark where Simone hit both of her free throws. The Lions then drew to within three with 1:43 remaining in the game until a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) layup plus Korona, Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) going a combined 6-6 from the line, clinching the 69-63 victory for D'Youville.
After setting a new career high in points last week, Cochrane did herself one better by setting a new career high with 22 points in the game. Korona was second on the team with 12 points and led the team with seven rebounds, followed by Cochrane with six. Magee led the team with five steals and four assists, adding four rebounds and five points. Simone added 11 points and four rebounds.
June, Smith and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) combined for 11 points, 10 rebounds and two assists of the bench. Evans added eight points, two rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
The next game for D'Youville comes on Wednesday, January 18th as the women host Medaille at 6pm.
