Medaille Takes Buffalo Cup Game Over D'Youville

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a loss to the Medaille Mavericks on Wednesday evening by the final score of 98-70.

Both teams played to a low scoring contest in the first several minutes of the first quarter. Medaille led 10-5 with 4:46 elapsed in the first before Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) hit a three to draw the game to within two. Following that basket, the Mavericks began to pull ahead as they went on a 13-0 scoring run to close out the quarter, leading 23-8 at the end of one.

Medaille continued their high offensive output, scoring 20 points in the first five minutes of the second quarter. With 2:01 to go in the half, the Spartans deficit grew 24 as they trailed 49-25. D'Youville closed out the half scoring the final six points and trailed at the half 49-32.

The second half began with a similar showing from the two teams. With the score 56-36 Medaille, the Mavericks went on to score 10 unanswered points to take a 66-36 lead with 5:24 to go in the quarter. D'Youville converted an and-one to pull back to within 21, but the Mavericks would again regain a firm grasp on the lead and end the third quarter leading 76-52.

In the final quarter of play, the Spartans had a strong offensive performance but it was not enough to overcome the Medaille lead as the Mavericks defeated D'Youville by the final score of 98-70.

Korona led the team in scoring Wednesday evening with 20 points. She also added 13 rebounds to lead the team, recording her fourth double-double of the season. Juniors Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) each added 15 points. Off the bench, CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) had five points. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) had three rebounds.

The next game for the women comes this Saturday, Januart 21st as D'Youville hosts Mount Aloysius at 1pm.
