Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a home defeat on Saturday afternoon to the visiting Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 84-47.
After going up 4-3 in the first two minutes of the game, D'Youville began to fall behind the Mounties. Aloysius went up 13-7 over the Spartans with 5:08 left in the first before they would go on a 9-5 scoring run, extending their lead to 10 after one period of play.
D'Youville opened the second quarter with a three from Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) to cut the deficit to seven. Mount Aloysius would answer right back with another three to go back up by 10. The Mounties would continue to build upon their lead as they went up by 16 with 1:26 to go in the half. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) would score the final basket of the half as Mount Aloysius would lead D'Youville 38-24 at the half.
The Mounties would open the third quarter going on a major scoring run. In the first 7:27 of play of the half, Aloysius would outscore D'Youville 22-3 until another Simone three. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) would end the quarter with a three as D'Youville trailed 65-35 with just the fourth to play.
In the fourth quarter, the Mounties grew their lead. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored six straight points in the middle of the quarter to highlight the D'Youville offense, but the Spartans could not surmount a comeback as they fell to the Mounties 84-47.
Korona led the team in scoring with 12 points Saturday afternoon. Smith added 10 points off the bench and led the team with 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) added nine rebounds and five points, while Simone scored nine points.
The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, January 25 as the Spartans travel to Penn State-Behrend. Tip-off is at 6pm.
