Erie, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team was defeated by the host Penn State-Behrend Lions Wednesday evening by the final score of 71-52.
Penn State-Behrend went up by three after a pair of made free throws in the first quarter, leading 8-5 after 3:48 of play. The Lions would then increase their lead to eight before Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/ Bishop Kearney) scored eight straight points to trail 15-14 with under three minutes to go in the first. With a one-point lead still, Behrend hit a pair of free throws at the end of the first to lead 21-18 after one quarter of play.
The Lions were able to take control of the game in the second, scoring the first 10 points of the quarter. They increased their lead to 16 with 3:10 remaining in the half and would be cut to 15 by an Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) jumper with less than two minutes to go. Behrend ended the half with a made three and they went into the half leading 44-26.
The third quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams. A combined 11 points was scored in the first eight minutes of the quarter as they Lions led 51-30 over the Spartans. D'Youville's offense stepped up towards the end of the third with Korona and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) scoring the final seven points of the quarter as the team trailed 53-37 with one quarter left to play.
Evans and Korona continued their scoring touches in the early goings of the fourth as they trimmed the deficit to 14. With 6:50 left in the game, Korona then cut the Behrend lead to 12. However the Lions were able to maintain their distance from the Spartan's and they would go on to win the game 71-52.
Korona was the team's leading scorer with 24 points and narrowly missed recording another double-double by pulling in nine rebounds. Evans also had a strong game by grabbing a team high 10 rebounds to go with seven points. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added six points, five rebounds and two assists off the bench.
The team will next travel to Pitt.-Greensburg on Saturday, January 28 to play the Bobcats at 1pm.
