Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team was defeated by the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats Saturday afternoon by the final score of 76-69.
Greensburg was out to an 8-4 lead in the first quarter after CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) scored the first four points for the Spartans. The Bobcats then doubled their lead from four to eight with 3:27 to go in the first after a made layup. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) then reduced D'Youville's deficit to four again as she made the final basket of the quarter and the Spartans trailed 21-17 after one.
Korona started off the second quarter with five straight points for the team to make it a three-point game. Pitt.-Greensburg would then go up by seven before four consecutive points from Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) would make the game 29-26 Bobcats. Cochrane was able to make it a one-point game just over three minutes later, with Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scoring back-to-back layups to give D'Youville the lead at 36-35 with 2:06 left in the half. The Bobcats tied the game up with under a minute to go and the two teams went into the half tied at 38-38.
To start the second half, Greensburg would score the first eight points to take a 46-38 lead over D'Youville. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) made it a six-point game with 3:46 remaining in the third, but the Bobcats would reach a 12-point lead 1:20 later. June would close out the quarter with layup, bringing the team's deficit back under 10 as the Spartans trailed the Bobcats 57-49 with one quarter to play.
D'Youville continued to trail by under ten in the fourth quarter, consistently at the heels of the Bobcats. A Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) layup made the score 66-60 with 6:05 to go in the game before Greensburg went back up 70-60. Two straight layups from June made the game 72-69 with 1:37 remaining in regulation, but the Bobcats were able to hold the Spartans scoreless after that as they went on to defeat D'Youville 76-69.
Leading the team in scoring Saturday afternoon was Korona with 23 points and also had a team high five rebounds. June added 14 points off the bench with a team high three assists. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) led the team with six steals and Cochrane scored eight points. Simone and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) each had seven points in the game.
The next game comes for the women comes on Wednesday, February 1 as the Spartans host Pitt.-Bradford at 6pm.
